Can't Leave Well Enough Alone: Battery Question

I love tinkering with my FJ40 and I’m always doing little projects or replacing/ cleaning/ upgrading. But one thing I never paid too close attention to was the battery. Why? Well, it never gave me a reason to. It starts up every time, cranks strong, runs the lights and the radio for a while even while the engines off etc. Well poking around under the hood the other day I noticed the production date on the battery. Its 12 years old!

Now it has me thinking, do I replace a fully functional battery as a precaution? I have a jump pack but I usually leave it in the 911 because the 40 has no real storage. I don’t mind spending a few bills on a new battery but I don’t want to if there’s no reason to. What say you OPPO?

have it load tested and if it passes, keep using it.  lead acid batteries die due to cycling and vibration/shock; as you cycle (discharge/charge) it, the plates begin “shedding” material.  more so the deeper you discharge it.  vibe/shock are self explanatory; mechanical damage to the cells.  if the battery sees light use and mostly stays at “maintenance” charge levels, then calendar age doesn’t necessarily matter.

yeah, replace it if you count on it. if it’s a toy then replace it when it dies.

it’s funny, dirt sunrise has the same thing going on, just in more “daily driver” condition (same colors even) . plus their excellent 80 series home.

If it’s fully sealed then keep it until it gets weak. If regular flooded, change it to something sealed. It reduces the risk of acid/vapors eating away the tray on such a clean truck.

I say, your L and C ruiser is flipping sweet!! It’s a toss up for me. If you drive it a lot, I’d say wait until the battery shows signs of dying. If you only drive it every once in a while, I’d replace it because one time you’ll go to drive it and it will be dead dead.

It lives in a heated garage so its a cushy life for a battery.

Thanks! I think I’ll run it this summer then refresh the battery and cables as part of next winters maintenance .

It’s a toy but but I hate getting stuck, especially if I’m on a trail or beach.

I hadn’t considered this. Its unsealed. I think I’ll replace it with an AGM as part of next winters maintenance .

I would count that as depending on it.  I mean, if you got stuck just out to dinner then no biggie, but if you go into 4 wheel drive...yeah I’d change it.  my 6 year old agm in my 80 series is getting replaced this spring for age alone, but I put a lot of strain on my battery as a daily and overland machine.

I’ve had more than a few ‘4 year’ batteries last 10+ years. Battery technology really started improving tremendously in the 80's. The real concern with these is charge/discharge cycles rather than ‘how old is it.’ Even wet cells.

If it’s cranking, charging, and amps test good? Leave it till it isn’t.

Load test it, it’s probably fine. My Lada’s battery is about the same age, and it’s seen time in storage outside at -40. It's not getting replaced until necessary.  If the charge has been kept up, it won’t freeze or sulphate itself.

what kind of climate does the f40 see when its not in the garage? Also if it dies when you’re on a trail how much is it going to suck to get a new battery or jump? or this way, how angry are you going to be when you go to leave and it doesn’t start up? That was me last summer just befo re we were about to head up to Lime rock.

Also go AGM all the way. Worth the extra 30bucks to remove any future headache from acid spills and rust. .

I drive it until they salt the roads so usually it gets put away in early november, so temps range from ~25 to 85F. I think Ill replace it after this summer. I’ll pull the battery tray, strip, repaint, new tie downs, new cables, and clean all the grounds. I hate electrical problems.
